As the holiday festivities wind down, many of us naturally start reflecting on what we’ve done—and what we could do better. This return to reality, while sometimes sobering, is not something to dread. It’s an opportunity to refocus, and for gardeners, that means embracing the joy of being outdoors.

There’s nothing quite like connecting with nature, and gardening is the perfect way to do it. Making the most of your time outside adds to that joy. To help you kick-start 2025 on a positive note, here are some resolutions (or tips) for your gardening journey. Take what resonates, and feel free to skip the rest!

Start composting – It’s easy, rewarding, and eco-friendly—no excuses!

Clarify your vocabulary – Let’s settle the debate: it is a garden hose, not hosepipe

Read labels carefully – Products often hide key details in the fine print.

Go organic – Incorporate more organic soils and gardening techniques.

Mulch smartly – Mulch protects tree roots and keeps mowers at bay, but don’t pile it against the trunk.

Add Natives – Nature’s natural selection of choice.

Use a drip soaker hose – Unlike sprinklers, it waters efficiently and avoids promoting leaf diseases.

Landscape Fruit – Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, and figs are delicious and adds texture to gardens.

Create a resting spot – Add a bench or sitting area near your garden. It shouldn’t be all work!

Dine al fresco – Enjoy snacks or meals outdoors more often.

Teach the next generation – Share your love of gardening with children or grandchildren (and avoid calling it “yard work”).

Apply dormant oil – A vital task during the dormant season to protect plants from pests.
