Hello fellow gardeners and friends! While I may be acquainted with some of you, I suspect I am a new addition to most of you. I have had the pleasure of working at my family business off and on since I was 12 (when I swore I would sell my interest to my brother). Many of you may recall seeing a red headed blur scamper past you at some point these past 30+ years. That was me! While I look forward to sharing all manner of stories with you (good and bad alike), today I would like to talk about the many families beyond us Bates’ that this business couldn’t exist without.

While we have had the pleasure of being a family business for 93 years, these past few decades have illuminated that we are actually a families business. For over 30 years, we have been fortunate to have Julie Patterson as our buyer and head guru. She works tirelessly, along with her husband Dan Burton, to keep our aisles stocked in leafy finery. Her sons, Shane and Adam Burton, also provided expert care for many years. We are also blessed to have the Chapman family as a part of our team. Adam, our general manager, his wife Racheal, and son Kurik each contribute to our daily successes here. Just recently we celebrated our former checkout manager Terry Kevlin’s retirement. She and her wife Robyn have both helped our business flourish in many ways. Even our current checkout manager Alysha Rodriguez-Avila has enlisted her husband Juan Barboza to help out during busy Spring weekends.
