By the time Tuesday before Valentine’s arrived, the garden had become a saturated, glistening dreamscape. A spectacularly soggy Saturday ensued, after the day for lovers. It came with a relentless cascade from the heavens that turned pathways into rivulets and garden beds into shimmering pools of promise. Some grumbled about the endless dampness, but Emily, the town’s most dedicated gardener, saw it as a blessing.

“This,” she said, standing under her still wet, wide-brimmed hat as water dripped from its edge, “is love from the clouds themselves.” Her neighbors chuckled as she waded into her rain-drenched vegetable patch, carefully checking the deep, rich soil. The earthworms wriggled happily in the moisture, the nearby compost steamed, and the young spinach and kale drank greedily.

On Valentine’s morning, Emily had walked through the garden, watching the droplets slide off the rose petals like tiny diamonds. The rain had softened everything—the air, the earth, even the hearts of those who normally bemoaned wet weather. She left small bouquets of rain-kissed camellias and carefully arranged hellebore flowers on doorsteps, a silent reminder that love, much like a garden, flourishes when nourished.

By week’s end, the clouds had wrung-out, and a chill now fills the air, revealing a sky so blue it felt like a promise. The rain barrels brimmed, the soil pulsed with life, and as Emily pressed a single heart-shaped leaf into her garden journal, she smiled.

“Voluminous wetness,” she whispered to herself. “The sweetest Valentine of all.” The coming weeks, as the first tender buds burst forth, everyone was reminded: love had rained down and taken root.
