This week has been the perfect embodiment of the classic saying “if you don’t like the weather, just wait five minutes.” We have had both flurries and warm sunshine within the past 7 days, and I think we are all happier to see the mercury rising again on the thermostat. This is ideal gardening weather, my friends, and we want to help you make the most of it! Through next Thursday, November 20, we are offering 20% off all* shade, ornamental, and fruit trees in addition to ALL EarthMix products in both bag and bulk!

While this last week served as a good reminder to pull out the thicker layers, you’ll be glad to be without them this next week. This Sunday may be our last open for the year, but don’t fret, we will continue to be here from 9 am to 4 pm throughout the week. Unlike many nurseries, we do not close down for the winter! Since our ground never freezes solid, we have the great fortune to be able to plant year round. It might not have the immediate showy impact that your springtime plantings give, but what you lack in instant gratification you gain in months of root growth and establishment.

Autumn is easily my favorite season. As the leaves fall, people are quick to take up their rakes and get to work building piles for bagging or jumping in. There’s a movement that’s been slowly growing that I admire — leave the leaves. You don’t have to leave them where they fall necessarily, but taking the time to tuck them away in your garden beds and leaving a small layer across the lawn is a kind and healthy way to protect local insects and invertebrates. All manner of small creatures use leaf litter as their cold weather homes, like our many colorful native salamanders. Leaf litter also benefits your gardens by helping retain moisture, preventing erosion, and suppressing weeds.

That wraps it up for this week! Stay tuned to Gardening Inside Out on Saturday mornings at 8am, or queue up the podcast for your next adventure. See what we’re doing behind the scenes on Facebook and Instagram. We look forward to helping you create a plant paradise!

Happy Gardening,

Sara Bates
