Fall Color Favorites

Bates Rewards Members Flash Sale: 20% off Sassafras*

All around us, the jewel toned palette of fall is transforming. Warm reds, oranges, yellows, and purples dazzle us as they slowly cascade to the ground. Tennessee is full of vibrant color this time of year, and we are happy to help gardeners who are looking to enhance their yards with autumnal splendor.

A showstopper of the season is Sassafras albidium. This trilobal leafed deciduous beauty is native to the eastern US from Michigan to Florida. They display reddish orange hues on beautiful open branches. Crush a leaf in your hand and you’ll be greeted with a unique spicy scent reminiscent of the root beer from your childhood. Traditionally, the roots were used to treat a variety of ailments, and they’re still used as a thickening agent for gumbo called filé powder. This week we’re delighted to offer them 20% OFF for our Members!

What if you don’t have space for a tree, but you’re still desiring an autumnal wonderland of your very own? There are no shortage of options to delight gardeners of every experience level. Witch Hazels are another plant that has been a boon to the traditional medicine cabinet and garden. We love the native Hamamelis virginiana, and we carry many other varieties such as Autumn Embers and Jelena. To help decide which is best for your space, check out this article from Chicago Botanic Garden to learn about their differences.

If you’re limited on space and want a little razzle dazzle, choose perennial favorites like Heuchera in Electric Plum, Fire Alarm, or a new Fyre Wing series variety. Pink Muhly Grass stuns alone or en masse. Grasses like Big Bluestem or Little Bluestem provide year round visual interest, excellent drought tolerance, and spectacular fall color. Whatever you choose, we’re happy to help you achieve your fall fantasy!
