May, Maybe Not!

We have felt the heat this week. With temperatures hovering near 90 degrees for much of this week, it logically seems as though summer is rapidly approaching…not so fast! Today, spring returns as does the seventy-degree temperatures. Those more seasonal air temperature sensations should continue through all of next week. My crystal ball remains partly cloudy beyond that. Rainfall for the upcoming days looks to be more of the ‘April Showers’ variety; it appears we are being spared the deluges occurring in the mid-west.
Even though spring starts in March and ends in June, spring exists primarily in April and May. With April now stepping aside, we are for all intents and purposes at the midpoint of spring. It's the time of year when the weather is wonderful, and so long as you avoid the news, all is right with the world. Gardening optimism abounds. Winter is a distant memory. Cool mornings and warm, brilliant afternoon sunshine make for an intoxicating mix: It makes people happy. Even the aches and pains we might be feeling move to the background. It is spring, and hope ‘springs’ eternal.
Many novice gardeners begin to get antsy. About half are concerned that it is too early to plant, while the other half are sure it’s too late. Experience shows that neither is true. We are in the sweet spot of the prime-planting season. Rainfall only makes it better in the long run, even if the weather occasionally delays your plans. The weather next week looks to be near perfection; the coming week might be your best opportunity to gather together everything for the planting of your gardens!
