The splendor of autumn is upon us! The leaves and temperatures are just beginning to fall. It’s not quite time to pick up the rake just yet, but there is still plenty to do around the garden. For starters, if you haven’t removed your summer annuals from your beds and pots, now is the time to do it before they turn into a gooey mess. We still have a bounty of pansies which will provide 6 months of color to see you through the winter.

Fall is a wonderful opportunity to inventory your gardening equipment. Take stock of your tools. When was the last time your pruners and loppers were cleaned and sharpened? Caring for your implements ensures use for years to come. Now’s also a great time to empty and clean out sprayers half filled with a mystery solution. Take those half empty rolled up bags of compost, and use them to top dress your lawn and garden beds. Knock the dirt out of unused pots to avoid cracking in the winter. These aren’t the most glamorous tasks, but they sure will make your life easier come Springtime.
