Hello, friends! We have certainly been blessed by rainfall this week. This weather may not be the most visually inspiring, but it is certainly a gift to the gardener. We got in our first smattering of Thanksgiving cacti, which are always a holiday favorite. But what about that one you’ve had for years that hasn’t rebloomed once? Well, there’s a reason for that. They require 12 to 14 hours of darkness a night for six weeks. Temperatures in the 55-65 degree range, along with drier moisture levels, also play a large role in bloom time. We may have passed the window for Thanksgiving, but you still have plenty of time to get them budding for Christmas! Whichever Schlumbergera variety you have, you can enjoy festive blooms for years to come with these tricks.
Tomorrow is Halloween, and it’s easy to forget amid the flurry of candy and costumes that there are those among us who suffer from food insecurity. Every one of us deserves the dignity of three meals a day, but sadly many are forced to get by on much less. Nashville is fortunate to be home to Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee. We want to support their efforts, as they’re expected to face an even higher demand in the coming months. We are collecting goods for a food drive, and we encourage you to give directly to Second Harvest if you are able.
