The H's Have It

We’re most appreciative for you voting, Bates Nursery & Garden Center, “Best of Nashville for the 21st time; 15th consecutive occurrence! Thank you!

There’s a unique sense of accomplishment when we set out to tackle a task and see it through to completion. There are times when we must press on through less-than-ideal conditions, and the reward is often simply relief. At this time of year, we all hear praise from those who admire the outdoor work we do. But come January or August, those same admirers are understandably absent.

As we enter this seasonably transitional autumnal period, it’s the perfect time to consider planting those shade trees or screening hedges. There’s an old adage that goes, “The best time to plant a tree was 10 years ago. The second-best time is now.” While we can’t rewind the clock, we can seize the moment! For the dedicated gardener, these cooler days are ideal for getting into the garden: If you find yourself waiting for perfect weather… gardening may not be your calling!

A reminder: now is also the time to clear out summer annuals. Frosty mornings are more frequent, and lingering too long could mean dealing with slimy, decaying plants instead of the firmer ones that are easier to pull. If you’re planning on planting fall-flowering ornamentals; pansies or violas, take-action now while selections are still abundant. Waiting doesn’t mean the plants will be of poor quality—just fewer options to choose from.
