Small Pots, Big Yields

April continues to unfold in a beautiful way with a chance of a break in the watering duties in the coming week. We continue to get multiple trucks in daily, so if you missed something on your first trip out, do come see us again. Even if you have yet to lift a trowel, there is still plenty of time to get your hands in the dirt!
Not all of us are blessed with a yard or garden. Those of us who do have green space around our homes often lack full sun areas required for growing food. The solution is simple — container gardening. You can grow a great deal of fruit, veg, and herbs from your windowsill, balcony, or driveway.
Whether you’re gardening indoors or outdoors, light requirements are the biggest priority for yields. Full sun is considered 6-8 hours of direct sunlight a day, so look out for porch overhangs and shade from branches. If you need containers for gardening, we have two large wire mesh bins by our palletized bagged material that serve as our pot recycling receptacles. If you have more questions on best plants/varieties, medium mixes, and alternative growing methods like hydroponics, don’t fret. Whether you’re growing indoors or out, the UT Ag Extension has your answers covered.
As far as potting medium and nutrition go, EarthMix® Proganix-O™ will ensure your success by giving your plants everything they need to get off to a strong start. If you’re looking for year round interest, try a dwarf raspberry or blueberry. Raspberry Shortcake is a small thornless variety, ideal for children’s gardens or smaller spaces. It’s hardy down to zone 4, making it capable of handling our winters. Berrybux, Jelly Bean, and Peach Sorbet are all dwarf varieties of blueberry that offer fruit in the summer and color in the winter.
That’s it for this week, friends. Tune in on Saturday mornings at 8 am for Gardening Inside Out for your weekly dose of inspiration and education.
