We have the first little smattering of cold season crops in -- two flats to be precise. Now you may notice that the weather is far from cool. Planting these crops in the ground right now might not be wise. Many of us know the danger of planting cold crops too early — bolting. No, your plants won’t sprout legs and run off, but they’ll do something just as irritating. Bolting refers to the premature flowering of a plant under stress, presented as a tall flower stalk leaping out of the center. We’ve seen it on cilantro in the spring when the greenhouse warms up, but it’s more common in the late summer.

When it’s this hot we just want to grasp at something autumnal, even if the weather doesn’t match. If you just can’t resist, we have four packs of Marathon Broccoli and Jade Cross Brussels for $2.49. We recommend keeping them cool in the shade & regularly watered to help prevent bolting. However, if you want to plant edibles without worry, we have lots of herbs that are ready for your garden: several mint varieties, catnip, lemon balm, rosemary, lavender, four kinds of basil, sage, thyme,  chives, and lemongrass eagerly await your arrival!

Perhaps the colors of fall are what you really go for. We are well equipped to help you transition seasons with jewel toned perennials. While it’s still too early for pansies, we’re right on time to get their surrounding plantings going strong. Autumn Joy Sedum, Goldenrod, and October Skies Aster provide year after year color, late season nutrition to pollinators, and a stunning backdrop to your fall annuals. The good news is, whatever you choose, it’s on sale this week. That pot you’ve been eyeing since May, a scoop of Garden, new snips— it’s all on sale!
