Finally Fall

We made it, y’all. The temperatures have finally dipped to a more reasonable range. It looks like we have some rainy days ahead of us too, fingers crossed. Thankfully it’s much easier to get out there and water now that the risk of heat stroke has passed.

We have received our Spring bulb shipment! From Allium to Wood Hyacinths, we have our most forward thinking gardeners covered. The only thing we’ve yet to receive are Onion sets, so stay tuned to the newsletter to learn when those drop. Seasoned professionals recommend you wait to plant your bulbs when the ground temperatures are consistently below 60 degrees. If you don’t want to poke and prod your beds with a thermometer every day, a good rule of thumb is to wait until we have at least two weeks of 50 degree temps overnight. 

Another exciting shipment that arrived on Monday was the long awaited Iseli truck. We have some beautiful selections of the finest conifers Oregon has to offer, along with stunning Japanese maples, bonsai starts, and color bowls. I got to tour their nursery a few weeks ago, and I was stunned to witness their craftsmanship firsthand. Every plant is hand dug and hand pruned, guaranteeing near perfect specimens that will delight gardeners of all experience levels. 

As the leaves begin to fall, I encourage you to find an unused corner of your garden and pile them there. Making a pile of leaves and stacking fallen branches on top of them provides important beneficial insects a cozy home for the cooler months. If you don’t have a corner to spare, some recommend building a barrier about a foot and a half high around the drip line of your trees and piling leaves and branches there. The leaves will act like a natural mulch, helping to keep moisture in the soil to nurture it all winter long.
